Commander’s Logs: San Japan Expedition

Commander Levi

Attention, UniVersus!

Commander Levi reporting in once again, this time to regale you all with yet another tale of my travels. While I haven’t quite yet saddled up in the van again, there’s more than one way for the Scouts and I to blaze trails for new UniVersus players.

This past weekend, I had the honor of teaming up with the San Antonio UniVersus community to perform some seriously awesome operations at San Japan! Starting all the way back in 2009, San Japan has grown to be San Antonio’s biggest anime convention! Between bringing in a new record of 28,000 attendees this year, and even the mayor swinging by for opening ceremonies, this con means serious business!

The San Antonio UniVersus player base is one of the strongest around, and one I’ve personally had the pleasure of interacting with a ton throughout my stead with the game. For the last two years, led by Juan Solis, the local community here has run demo operations in San Japan’s gaming area. Fueled by nothing but passion, a love for the game, and the desire to see their community grow, these folks have been bringing all their own decks, running all their own events, and teaching the game to San Japan con-goers in true UniVersus community style.

But this year, things got serious! After learning of Juan’s efforts I knew that some support was in order. So, I donned the Commander’s cape once more and set out to the land of San Antonio to help out Juan and his team in their mission to spread UniVersus to a convention full of avid anime, manga, and gaming fans!

The weekend was jam packed from start to finish! Demos, starter deck tournaments, boss battles, and so much more went down all day every day. The San Japan crowd happily welcomed us, with so many of them incredibly eager to learn all about the game where worlds collide! Demos were nonstop, with several players getting their own decks together and playing in their first ever events! The knowledge and passion was overflowing as we rocked a full house of aspiring new fighters.

When bits of downtime did present themselves, I made sure to scout the con for lots of dope merch. It was hard to take a few steps without running into seriously awesome cosplays too!

What-A-Cosplay!

SUFFER AS I HAVE!

Juan and I even got invited to a mixer full of Texas convention industry members! It gave me a great chance to show off all the seriously awesome stuff the team has been working on with Attack on Titan to some pretty important folks, and maybe even garner some potential interest in even more UniVersus in the scene here. (and maybe channel my inner supervillain a lil bit)

A great balance of business and fun are soup for the soul. From watching the light bulbs click for tons of new UniVersus fighters to some awesome merch hunting, San Japan was a massive success! Juan and his fellow local players did an amazing job spreading knowledge and fun for three days straight, and I hope they get to see some of these new players across the table very soon as the San Antonio community grows and grows!

It was an honor getting to tag along and serve alongside these fine community members in another successful mission! The UniVersus spirit is burning strong right now in this community and many others as this year continues to heat up! It’s an exciting time in our game right now, and it’s only going to get bigger and crazier as we keep moving forward!

Until then, keep giving your hearts out there and good luck in our upcoming Regional season!
